VW to establish new auto part packaging centre in Wilhelmshaven

From 2019, vehicle parts for the Volkswagen Group are to be packed and prepared for shipment to countries such as Mexico, China and the USA at the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. With the new packaging centre, the Volkswagen Group is reacting to the growing demand for vehicles on overseas markets. As a result, more and more parts such as headlamps, audio systems or steering wheels need to be exported for local production. The Volkswagen Group has selected a new location in close proximity to EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven for a facility to pack these new volumes.

According to VW, some 7,000 different vehicle parts for Volkswagen, Audi and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are to be packed in Wilhelmshaven and then shipped to 25 locations in 15 overseas countries. In total, vehicle parts will be packed in more than 12,000 40-foot containers per year. The new packaging centre is to be built on 100,000 m² of land at the freight village directly adjacent to EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven. It will consist of four warehouses with a total area of more than 40,000 m².

Thomas Zernechel, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics, says: “The decision in favour of the Wilhelmshaven location is of strategic importance for the Volkswagen Group. JadeWeserPort is Germany’s only deep-water port. With the packing facility, we will be establishing a direct connection to a port which will allow our parts to be carried by the largest ships in the world.”
