    Architect of EUROGATE’s success retires

After around 40 years of service for the BLG Logistics Group and EUROGATE, 22 years of which as Chairman of BLG and almost 17 years at the head of EUROGATE, Emanuel Schiffer (65) is retiring at the end of this year. An expert with a profound knowledge of the shipping industry, he started his professional career at BLG in 1978 – as a junior manager in the Technology division. In the mid-80s, he became Deputy Head of Operations in Bremerhaven and from 1994 took over as Head of BLG’s Container business segment. One year later, he was appointed to the BLG Logistics Group Management Board. With the foundation of EUROGATE in 1999, Emanuel Schiffer was appointed Joint Chairman of Europe’s leading shipping line-independent container handling group alongside Thomas Eckelmann.

Emanuel Schiffer has helped to initiate pioneering developments, including the most recent deepening of the River Weser in the 1990s and construction of Wilhelmshaven Container Terminal. Together with EUROKAI CEO Thomas Eckelmann, Schiffer has written the EUROGATE success story. With 12 terminal locations in the near future and a total handling volume of 14.5 million TEUs (2015), the company is Europe’s leading container handling group.

Schiffer began his professional career as an assistant engineer with Hapag-Lloyd. After taking a degree at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, he acquired his engineering licence at sea, before embarking on a post-graduate course in economics. He joined the Technology division of BLG at the age of 27. In 1986, Schiffer was appointed Deputy Head of BLG’s Bremerhaven Operations. In 1994, he took over as Head of BLG’s Container business segment. One year later, he was appointed to the BLG Logistics Group Management Board.
