We are happy to look back on that week, when for five days everything at the Bremerhaven quayside was focused on tall ships. The eighth “Sail Bremerhaven” was opened on 12 August by German Federal President Joachim Gauck with the traditional “sail-in”. One by one, majestic deep-water windjammers such as the flagship “Alexander von Humboldt II”, built in 2011, or the “Kruzenshtern” (formerly the “Padua“), built in 1926 and still sailing today, passed through the Nordseeschleuse, Kaiserschleuse, Schleuse Neuer Hafen, the Seebäderkaje and the Geeste/Doppelschleuse locks.

More than 270 sailing ships counting around 3,500 crew members from 20 nations participated in this year’s windjammer festival. The organisers were satisfied: other sailing ships, too, such as the four-mast barquentine “Esmeralda” or the sail-training ship “Guayas”, drew a total of 1.2 million visitors to the quayside of the seaport this year. Bremerhaven has thrived on shipbuilding, shipping and port operations for over 180 years and has developed into a maritime centre for research, high-tech, culture and maritime tourism.

At the opening of “Sail” on Wednesday, EUROGATE Technical Services organised a round trip for some of its customers on the sailing vessel “Mercedes”, and in splendid weather was able to take lots of photos. A EUROGATE photographer also took some shots from the container terminal site, for example from a gantry crane, which can be viewed here on the blog and on the EUROGATE social media channels.

We are already looking forward to the next “Sail” in Bremerhaven, even if that means being patient for another five years.
