Three new container gantries for NTB

Assembly of three new Liebherr container gantries on the terminal site of North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven GmbH (NTB) is progressing well. These are the first three of six new cranes for NTB in total. The parts are manufactured in Killarney/Ireland. The container gantries were delivered in individual parts and are being assembled on-site. They are among the largest cranes of their kind in the world. Weighing around 2,225 tonnes each (including ballast and spreaders), they have an overall height of 135 metres and can span 73 metres over the water’s edge. Thus, they are optimally prepared for handling the world’s largest mega container ships.

The new gantries will also look different from the cranes currently at work at the terminal because they have a lattice boom. The cranes are equipped entirely with LED lighting; the driver’s cabin comes from the Dutch manufacturer Merford. The Liebherr cranes are also equipped with status monitoring of the powertrain, hoist and trolley and an anti-collision system for detecting superstructures.

The cranes are being assembled in the hinterland of the terminal, to the west of the tracks of the Bremerhaven Rail Terminal. Once assembled, the gantries will be transported to the Stromkaje riverside quay by HGV, where they will be connected to the power supply system and put through a final test run. The commissioning of the first three cranes is planned for the first quarter of 2018, with the remaining three being installed and operational by the summer.
