02.08.2018 - Hamburg. EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg handles record number of individual ships.
In recent days, EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH) has handled a total of 25,276 TEUs (standard containers) on two ultra-large container vessels (ULCV) for the 2M network. A total of 12,509 TEUs were handled on the MADISON MAERSK, which set sail at noon today. The MSC MIRJAM put to sea last Friday again, after a total of 12,767 TEUs had been handled. Both values represent a new record high for the handling of individual ships at CTH.
Wolfgang Schiemann, Managing Director of EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg, is both proud and relieved with both handling figures: “Handling 12,000 TEUs and more on a single ship proves how efficient CTH is and how flexibly we can respond to the growing use of ultra-large container vessels by shipping companies. However, I would not like to hide the fact that these new dimensions mean considerable effort for the team, technology and the terminal as a whole. I would like to thank all our staff for their superb commitment.”
Ultra-large container vessels with a load capacity of 20,000 TEUs (or more) present major challenges for container terminals. Their increasing use is leading to significantly higher demands on staff and materials in the handling process. As the number of containers to be moved per ship is increasing, it is not only the container gantries, straddle carriers and their operators that are exposed to more stress: there is also more demand on the terminal site itself and on the public infrastructure, such as the rail and road connections to the hinterland. On top of this, staff requirements fluctuate dramatically when handling ultra-large container vessels. As the ships put into the terminal less frequently and are not always on schedule, estimating capacity planning for the terminals is more challenging than ever.
